OSTZEIT
10 August 2009

The "Ostzeit" exhibition which opens on August 14th in the >Haus der Kulturen der Welt< (John-Foster-Dulles-Allee 10 – Berlin) will functions as mediation platform for cultural exchange through vivid photography and insightful writing of contemporary witnesses. The only remaining is: Which other culture? In order to preserve their memories and experiences the authors and photographers of “Ostzeit” captured authentic and descriptive images of a place they used to call home. Life in the former German Democratic Republic- DDR was quite different from the way West-Germans lived theirs. Four of East-Germany’s most renowned photographers namely Harald Hauswald, Sibylle Bergemann, Ute and Werner Mahler are founders of the photography agency >Ostkreuz< and their exhibition pictures are from 1972 onward, illustrating the fashion, architecture and history of a country that no longer exists. Although the additional podium discussion might leave a little room for moments of nostalgia, the main goal is the interexchange of impressions, ideas and memories between visitors and artists. Everyone who wishes to take a trip to the East-Germany’s historical and cultural past is welcomed to take in all that Ostzeit has to offer. Credits: copyright Harald Hauswald/OSTKREUZ.
