Art is synonymous with self-expression, and the freedom of speech and thought. But during Germany’s divided years, the Eastern German police state restricted artistic liberty and laid out tight guidelines for all areas of literature and art. “und jetzt” documents the attempts of female artists to challenge the doctrine and make plans to breakdown the regime. What is most interesting, though, is finding out how these women adjusted to a unified Germany. Many have received little attention outside the system they attempted to boycott. The exhibition has made it its goal to bring these female artists back into the limelight. The focus will be on the inter-medial work, the cross over from fine art, literature, photography, music, dance movement and film, most of the art on display is from the late 70s and 80s, but more recent works will be displayed too. On 26th November, curators Angelika Richter and Beatrice E. Stammer will be presenting the concept of the exhibition and giving insights into its background. Many of the artists involved in the project will be present (from 5pm). The exhibition then runs from 27th November – 20th December at ›Künstlerhau Bethanien‹.
