Krippendorff at SEPTEMBER Gallery
19 March 2010

The Berlin-based American artist, >David Krippendorff< is presenting his video Remember Me (2005) in his first solo exhibition at SEPTEMBER. In his work, he addresses death and loss and explores the visual metaphors that cinema has inscribed into collective memory. Using a collage technique, he blends together scenes from a wide variety of films, many from B horror movies, through this he visually evokes an iconography of classical painting.  The video explores the ritualistic and aestheticized depiction of death in our western culture, while the artist’s intent seems to oscillate between the highly personal and the detached ironic. In addition to his video work, Krippendorff has created a drawing series inspired by classical vanitas still lifes and Victorian mourning engravings. As an homage to the genre, each of these drawings harbors a classical film poster of a ’60s or ’70s horror film.
